Krishna Janmashtami also called as Gokulashtami is an Indian festival celebrated as a Birth Anniversary of Lord Krishna, Lord Krishna is also named as eight “Avatar” of the Lord Vishnu (one of the principal deities). Gokulashtami usually arrives in the month of August or rarely 1st week of September. As per Hindu calendar, Gokulashtami arrives in the month of Shraavana.
Why is Krishna Janmashtami celebrated?
Gokulashtami is celebrated on the occasion of Birth Anniversary of Lord Krishna, Krishna is 8th Son of Devaki and Vasudeva, he was born midnight at Mathura in the month of Bhadrapad.
Where is Krishna Janmashtami celebrated in India?
It’s majorly celebrated in two cities of Uttar Pradesh – Mathura and Vrindavan, But some states like Bihar, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. Gokulashtami is celebrated in many ways such as (Rasa Lila), Dramas performed on the life of Lord Krishna, Dance, Jagaran and Singing Devotional songs. Rasa Lila is termed as “The piece of Dance ” The divine Love of Krishna and Radha.
Rasa-Lila is a play where Krishna plays the flute between many beloved Gopi’s which encourages them to dance while listening to the music.
Krishna Janmashtami is celebrated differently in Gujarat and Maharashtra, A festival called Dahi Handi where a pot filled with Curd (“DAHI“), Butter and Cream. The pot (“HANDI”) is tied between two building with a tight rope holding the pot in middle. Once the rope is tied, a group of people climb one above one in a Cone shape format or we may call a Human pyramid, Where people with strong body’s and weight stand at the base and a small boy or a girl will climb at the top to break the “Handi” with stone or any hard material.

The innovative sport is inspired by Lord Krishna as he loved eating butter, He used to steal butter from houses in the neighbourhood. People used to hide butter or store butter on the top floor so the Krishna couldn’t eat them. So by the above-written way he used to break the pot with his friends and steal the butter written in the Story of Shri Krishna.
There is a holiday for students on the Occasion of Dahi Handi in some states of India.
